Short-Term Project Assistants

Will travel to Brčko to assist either individual projects (projects such as dance, music, drama, photography, sports, IT training, language training, co-ordination of the youth magazine Anonimus & radio project, & art), or more generally in a variety of Firefly projects.

Length of contract: 1 - 6 months. Your contract will be reviewed at the end of two weeks, when, if by mutual agreement between you and Firefly, it is decided that the job is not suitable for you, your contract will be ended with two weeks' notice. After two or more months you may decide to change to an individual project co-ordinator's contract (6 months to 1 year - see separate job description). Effectively this just means you'll be organising your own activities rather than assisting with other staff members' projects.

Remuneration: You will be asked to raise the funds to cover your living costs and the additional costs to Firefly of your project - no wages will be paid. A rough estimate of what you would need is: £175 project costs per month (for internet, paper, space rental, photocopying, electricity, phone, project materials, and any events that you may organise or take part in); £150 to £200 accommodation and living costs per month (rent of a small flat is approximately £100 per month and can be arranged by Firefly). Firefly will be happy to help with the fundraising process, supplying collecting tins, raffle tickets, addresses to write to and general advice & support.

Your duties will include:

• Assisting local staff either on the specific project of your choice or on various Firefly projects, arranging & supervising individual activities such asarts and crafts, painting, sports and other games.
• Training local staff in any skills you possess that can be passed on to the permanent local team (not essential for this post).
• Assisting with all day-to-day duties (such as driving) at the project, as they are needed.
• Regular liaison with the Firefly office in the UK, including monthly reports and regular activity summaries.

You may also want to begin by helping out generally, to get a feel of the project, and then move on to organising your own regular activity; this is also fine! If you do, we usually ask that you think about whether the project you're organising is a one-off, or is a long-term one that will continue after you leave; if it's the latter, then you will also need to think about who will take it on and make sure there's an overlap period between your leaving and their doing so. For example, we have various youth (under-18s) volunteers running their own projects and you will very likely find that one of the participants of your project might like to take over as a youth volunteer.
